Dating in your 30s is kak. “Mate” walks through the cesspit of love, heartbreak, hope and all the grey bits in between. Sometimes crass, loud mouthed and white knuckled; “Mate” gets stuck in there and tackles dating, dining, sixty-nine-ing and matters of the heart. Set in a “Love Recovery” workshop, we meet three women experiencing the raw and painfully humorous realities of single life.

The Swing Collective is a 5-piece swing/pop band new on the Cape Town scene comprising of professional musicians all active in the music industry. The group plays swing classics, as well as pop tunes given an old-school swing twist: mixing together vintage and retro into a sound that is interesting and distinctive.

At the dawn of the Yugoslavian war, a South African photo journalist records a soon to be taboo love affair between a Serbian man and a Bosnian woman. A love affair that has blossomed from the bud of a childhood friendship. But can love survive war? Can friendship survive Sarajevo?

Jitsvinger – Smoortjies & Smoothies | 23 – 24 June 2017
Smoortjies and Smoothies will take the audience on an inter-generational dialogue when these two artists of difference generations share their proudly homegrown musical recipes. The audience can expect to hear a blend of hip hop and African piano mixed with Ghoema, Cape jazz and Afrikaaps (Afrikaans vernacular). “Smoortjies and Smoothies is a play on oral musical traditions being passed on to the next generation, in the same way family stories, family recipes and other traditions are passed on. Smoortjies and Smoothies is based on exactly that. With Smoortjies and Smoothies we hope to whet the appetites for those with a taste for original local music,” said Jitsvinger.

The Jazzart Winter season celebrates the end of the trainee’s second year of their Three Year programme. The theme of the performance is ‘Our Youth Celebrating Women’ in recognition of the courage and strength of our women who gave birth to our nation.

An exhibition to showcase the work done by the Chrysalis Academy, a youth development organisation which empowers young people to take responsibility for their personal growth.

Masque Theatre
23 – 24  June 17 | Sillage
written and directed by Penelope Youngleson (Standard Bank Silver Ovation Awards 2014, 2015; Fleur du Cap award 2014) and stars Michele Belknap and Rebecca Makin-Taylor. Sillage won the Standard Bank Gold Ovation award at the National Arts Festival in 2016: only the fifth gold to be awarded to a theatre production in the festival’s history – and the second to a female theatre maker. It was also nominated for Best New South African Script at the 2017 Fleur du Caps. Sillage will tour to Johannesburg in November 2017.

By means of costumes, accessories and contextual images, this exhibition traces the origins of isishweshwe cloth from its roots as a trade item in Asia and Europe, to its establishment as a much-loved southern African material icon.

Until 28 February 2018 | Through Positive Eyes is an exhibition which builds on the work of South African photographer Gideon Mendel, harnessing the power of the arts to banish HIV stigma.

Until 15 December 2017 | At Face Value
While most portraits focus on the face, others reveal more about the environment and social relationships, especially between an artist and a sitter.

Until 31 July 2017 | Magic of Asian Puppets
Asian theatre puppets are an expression of the richness of Asia’s performing arts. The over 100 string, rod, hand and shadow puppets featured on this exhibition have survived the centuries, during which the puppet theatre has been a veritable living encyclopedia of Asian life and culture.

The Art and Music Centres of the Western Cape Education Department will use an exhibition space in the Iziko South African National Gallery, Annexe for a showcase exhibition of learners work.

22 June until 1 October 2017 | Lionel Davis: Gathering Strands
The Iziko South African National Gallery together with the District Six Museum is pleased to announce an exhibition by Lionel Davis. The anti-Apartheid activist and artist will be displaying his work at an exhibition titled, Lionel Davis: Gathering Strands which comprises of work which echoes the country’s political and cultural shifts, whilst keeping the memory of his life in District Six alive.

Iziko South African Museum
Until 31 December 2017 | Crossing the Ecoline
Between the atmosphere and the ocean – at the point where the absorption of carbon dioxide takes place – is the “ecoline”. This is where two environments interconnect.

The Bo-Kaap Museum, situated in the historic area that became home to many Muslims and freed slaves after the abolition of slavery, showcases local Islamic culture and heritage.

Groot Constantia Manor House with its exhibition of furniture, paintings, textiles, ceramics, brass, and copperware, provides an insight into the life of a successful 18th to late 19th century Cape farmer.

Koopmans-de Wet House
This house museum is furnished as a home for a well-to-do Cape family during the late 18th Century. It houses some of the best pieces of Cape furniture and silver in the country, in addition to a priceless collection of ceramics.

The Iziko Maritime Centre features an overview of shipping in Cape Town, and the earliest existing model of Table Bay harbour, completed in 1885 by prisoners and warders of Breakwater Prison, forms part of the exhibitions.

The Iziko Planetarium and Digital Dome, one of only 6 fully fledged planetaria on the African Continent, brings the most advanced digital visualisation technology to Cape Town.

Rust en Vreugd was built as a home for Willem Cornelis Boers, a high-ranking official of the VOC (Dutch East India Company) known as a fiscal, around 1777–1778.

Social History Centre
After a three-year programme of renovation and extension of the National Mutual Building on Church Square, it was handed back to Iziko during a media preview event held on International Museum Day, 18 May 2010.
