Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern, two unassuming Elizabethan gentlemen, have been mysteriously summoned to the Danish court. Hot-footing it across the land, so to speak, they find themselves in a confounding universe where coins always land on ‘heads’, a melancholy prince ‘lives in a nutshell’ and the wind comes up through the floorboards.

Tells the story of heavyweight fifties boxing champion Ezekiel Dlamini whose self-appointed ring name was “King Kong” to the wildly exhilarating music of Todd Matshikiza.

Theatre Arts Admin Collective
A thriving theatre centre that supports the local theatre community by providing opportunity and affordable access to resources and training. They have various productions which can be viewed either on their website or listed on their Facebook page.

Grace Notes | until 20 July at St Georges Cathedral & 27 July at St John’s Church
Following its acclaimed premiere in France in 2016, this unique concert of a cappella sacred music, curated by Thuthuka Sibisi, will be heard in Cape Town for the first time. Juxtaposing ancient and modern music from Europe and Africa, Grace Notes intersperses sacred compositions by Byrd, Palestrina, Duruflé and Pärt with religious music drawn from Xhosa, Venda, Zulu and Swahili traditions. A moving reflection on the yearning to express spirituality through music, Grace Notes uncovers lines of connection across continents and centuries.

“My photography journey started at the age of 12 when I received my first film camera, an old Praktica SLR with a 50mm lens. Initially I was more interested in landscapes, however, I ended up working in Johannesburg where landscape photography jobs can be few and far between. Having always been fascinated by the alluring world of people photography, I asked my friends to model for me. This passion grew so I took a course in studio lighting and the art of make-up.

Kirsten Sims’s solo shows are an expression of where she is in her life. At the time of her first solo show, Middle of Nowhere, she had graduated from her Honours degree and left Stellenbosch to move to Cape Town. With her first solo show behind her, You Are Here marked a period of making a home in Cape Town and becoming more established in her career.

Solo Exhibition Openings: Pierre Vermeulen | Mostaff Muchawaya | SMAC Gallery |8 July – 19 August 2017
Pierre Vermeulen was born in 1992. He currently lives and works in Cape Town as a multimedia and installation artist. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts from the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa in 2015. Vermeulen’s work forms part of prominent collections, such as the Zeitz MOCAA Collection in Cape Town, South Africa; The Royal Portfolio Collection, housed at The Silo Hotel, in Cape Town, South Africa

Mostaff Muchawaya was born in 1981 in Nyazura, Manicaland, Zimbabwe. He received formal art training from the National Gallery of Zimbabwe School of Visual Arts and Design from 2002 to 2003. Muchawaya currently lives and works in Harare and is part of the artist’s collective at the Village unhu open art studio.

By means of costumes, accessories and contextual images, this exhibition traces the origins of isishweshwe cloth from its roots as a trade item in Asia and Europe, to its establishment as a much-loved southern African material icon.

Until 28 February 2018 | Through Positive Eyes is an exhibition which builds on the work of South African photographer Gideon Mendel, harnessing the power of the arts to banish HIV stigma.

While most portraits focus on the face, others reveal more about the environment and social relationships, especially between an artist and a sitter.

Until 31 July 2017 | Magic of Asian Puppets
Asian theatre puppets are an expression of the richness of Asia’s performing arts. The over 100 string, rod, hand and shadow puppets featured on this exhibition have survived the centuries, during which the puppet theatre has been a veritable living encyclopedia of Asian life and culture.

The Art and Music Centres of the Western Cape Education Department will use an exhibition space in the Iziko South African National Gallery, Annexe for a showcase exhibition of learners work.

22 June until 1 October 2017 | Lionel Davis: Gathering Strands
The Iziko South African National Gallery together with the District Six Museum is pleased to announce an exhibition by Lionel Davis. The anti-Apartheid activist and artist will be displaying his work at an exhibition titled, Lionel Davis: Gathering Strands which comprises of work which echoes the country’s political and cultural shifts, whilst keeping the memory of his life in District Six alive.

Iziko South African Museum
Until 31 December 2017 | Crossing the Ecoline
Between the atmosphere and the ocean – at the point where the absorption of carbon dioxide takes place – is the “ecoline”. This is where two environments interconnect.

The Bo-Kaap Museum, situated in the historic area that became home to many Muslims and freed slaves after the abolition of slavery, showcases local Islamic culture and heritage.

Groot Constantia Manor House with its exhibition of furniture, paintings, textiles, ceramics, brass, and copperware, provides an insight into the life of a successful 18th to late 19th century Cape farmer.

Koopmans-de Wet House
This house museum is furnished as a home for a well-to-do Cape family during the late 18th Century. It houses some of the best pieces of Cape furniture and silver in the country, in addition to a priceless collection of ceramics.

The Iziko Maritime Centre features an overview of shipping in Cape Town, and the earliest existing model of Table Bay harbour, completed in 1885 by prisoners and warders of Breakwater Prison, forms part of the exhibitions.

The Iziko Planetarium and Digital Dome, one of only 6 fully fledged planetaria on the African Continent, brings the most advanced digital visualisation technology to Cape Town.

Rust en Vreugd was built as a home for Willem Cornelis Boers, a high-ranking official of the VOC (Dutch East India Company) known as a fiscal, around 1777–1778.

Social History Centre
After a three-year programme of renovation and extension of the National Mutual Building on Church Square, it was handed back to Iziko during a media preview event held on International Museum Day, 18 May 2010.
