We will sculpt in earthernware (terracotta red-firing clay) a figure inspired by past or future eras using quick and clever building techniques. There are so many cultures and myths and legends to draw inspiration from. Look at pre-Columbian South America, India, Egypt, China and our own Africa to name just a few! Come prepared with your own images or we will show you ideas from our own archives.. Try to make the image your own by personalizing it. This workshop gives you permission to play and have fun!

Popular Comedian Marc Lottering’s most beloved character, Aunty Merle Abrahams from Belgravia Road in Athlone, sashays onto the stage in the musical-comedy AUNTY MERLE, THE MUSICAL.

High Drama unfolds as Merle’s daughter Abigail (Tarryn Lamb) announces her engagement to Alan (Stephen Jubber). As Merle puts it: “he’s a good-looking white chap!” But it’s never smooth-sailing in the world of Musicals. Abigail’s twisted and corrupt ex, Denver Paulse, (Loukmaan Adams), who holds a dodgy top job with the SABC, is determined to get her back. If not, he threatens to reveal a very dark secret which is bound to tear the lovers apart.

This one-woman piece sees ‘Chantal’, a girl from the Cape Flats, navigating a world of new Jewish experiences, from meeting the boyfriend’s family at her first shabbos ever to late-night benching (no, not the gym kind)! She wrestles with confusion over her identity and the various labels that are placed on her while trying to understand Yiddish (oy vey!), gefilte fish and decades-old faribels! She deals with the confusion over what to wear to a bris (ritual circumcision of infant boy) and being questioned about her afro hair.

Instead, Ruga excavates collective memory and exclusionary national myth to rebuild both in wholly new shapes – to make a world where the exiled can reign. Iziko Slave Lodge 
The Slave Lodge is one of the oldest buildings in Cape Town. The many names of the building over three centuries – Slave Lodge, Government Offices Building, Old Supreme Court, and SA Cultural History Museum – reflect the long and rich history of the building.

Until 28 February 2018 | Through Positive Eyes is an exhibition which builds on the work of South African photographer Gideon Mendel, harnessing the power of the arts to banish HIV stigma.

Iziko South African National Gallery
South Africa’s premier art museum houses outstanding collections of South African, African, British, French, Dutch and Flemish art.

Selections from the Permanent Collection change regularly to enable the museum to have a full programme of temporary exhibitions of paintings, works on paper, photography, sculpture, beadwork, textiles and architecture. Updates of the various exhibitions can be viewed on their web page on bottom right section.

Iziko South African Museum
The South African Museum houses more than one and a half million specimens of scientific importance. The collections now range from fossils almost 700-million years old to insects and fish caught last week. There are also stone tools made by people 120 000 years ago, traditional clothes from the last century, and T-shirts printed yesterday.

The Bo-Kaap Museum, situated in the historic area that became home to many Muslims and freed slaves after the abolition of slavery, showcases local Islamic culture and heritage.

Groot Constantia Manor House with its exhibition of furniture, paintings, textiles, ceramics, brass, and copperware, provides an insight into the life of a successful 18th to late 19th century Cape farmer.

Koopmans-de Wet House
This house museum is furnished as a home for a well-to-do Cape family during the late 18th Century. It houses some of the best pieces of Cape furniture and silver in the country, in addition to a priceless collection of ceramics.

The Iziko Maritime Centre features an overview of shipping in Cape Town, and the earliest existing model of Table Bay harbour, completed in 1885 by prisoners and warders of Breakwater Prison, forms part of the exhibitions.

The Iziko Planetarium and Digital Dome, one of only 6 fully fledged planetaria on the African Continent, brings the most advanced digital visualisation technology to Cape Town.

Rust en Vreugd was built as a home for Willem Cornelis Boers, a high-ranking official of the VOC (Dutch East India Company) known as a fiscal, around 1777–1778.

Social History Centre
After a three-year programme of renovation and extension of the National Mutual Building on Church Square, it was handed back to Iziko during a media preview event held on International Museum Day, 18 May 2010.

Drawing Workshop Exhibition
Greatmore Studios’ First Exhibition of 2018. The Drawing Workshop Exhibition, Opening 10th January 2018. Closes 24th January 2018.

A three-day open drawing workshop was initiated towards the end of December 2017.
The space was open to anyone who needed to draw with others. There was no objective or discussion as everyone simply fell into doing their work, coming and going, commenting occasionally. The exhibition has been selected from work made during the three days. It is a workshop exhibition in that their work is open and directly made with good hands and hearts in the spirit of learning/teaching by example.
