Audre Lorde: The Berlin Years- 1984 to 1992 Screening/Discussion
“Audre Lorde – the Berlin Years 1984 to 1992 documents Audre Lorde’s influence on the German political and cultural scene during a decade of profound social change, a decade that brought about the fall of the Berlin Wall and the re-unification of East and West Germany. This chronicles an untold chapter of Lorde’s life: her empowerment of Afro-German women, as she challenged white women to acknowledge the significance of their white privilege and to deal with difference in constructive ways.”

Glassology by Libbey Masterclass; Creating the perfect glass
A new dawn for bartending competitions.

The bar industry is changing rapidly and with it bartending contests evolve to a new level. For ages bartenders competitions like Bacardi Legacy and Diageo World Class were the status quo. It’s glassware brand Libbey that challenges drinks professionals in a new and different way. In the international Glassology by Libbey design contest it’s not the drink, but the glass as an essential ingredient of the whole drinking experience that is the focal point of the competition.

The importance of being extraordinary
Dr Wayne W. Dyer and Eckhart Tolle delve into everything from ancient spiritual texts to contemporary pop culture as they tackle questions we all wrestle with, such as Who am I? What is real? and What is the meaning of life? Yet even as they discuss weighty topics such as the economy and addiction, the mood remains graceful, loving and even humorous. Through their combined wisdom and perception, Wayne and Eckhart bring you inspired lessons for an exhilarating spiritual awakening. This, according to Eckhart, ‘consists of relinquishing identification with the conditioned mind through the cultivation of awareness.’

Heavy Chef Cape Town: Magda Wierzycka
After a packed house in Johannesburg, Magda Wierzycka is coming to Heavy Chef Cape Town on the 18th of September.

Magda gave a scintillating talk at Primedia Place in Sandton earlier in August. During the event Q&A section, Magda gave a first hand account of how she is single-handedly trying to tackle corruption in South Africa. However, we’re not going to focus on Magda’s exploits in the press. Being a platform for entrepreneurs, Heavy Chef invited Magda to our stage to talk about her journey from a Polish youngster arriving in South Africa not being able to speak English, to becoming one of the continent’s most recognisable business leaders.

Finders Keepers ARTventure(ages 3-10):Scavenger Hunt & Art Making
Youngblood Arts & Culture and Pukka Theatre are delighted to welcome Adventure Clubs kids for an immersive adventure of interactive artistic fun!

On this exciting and brand new adventure, kids will receive a Mission Card before being led through the gallery space. Here we will enjoy interacting with various artworks as we learn what each is made of and then go hunting for the same kinds of materials. Little adventurers will scavenge for items like metal, wood and cloth, which they will then use in making their own art multi-media creations later on in the adventure! These materials are tactile clues that will help them remember each piece of art too!

Everyday Anomaly | 9 Sep – 15 Oct 2017
Normality, an idea so ingrained in culture that it feels like truth, is an invention of nineteenth century Europe. Originating in statistics, norms first entered language and culture as a means to describe the distribution of human characteristics, a way to talk about bodies and behaviours on a grand scale that quickly became synonymous with their typical forms. But it’s a slim line between an average and an ideal at the best of times: what’s true for many can too easily become what should be true for all. Today we’re most familiar with the norm as a standard by which we judge ourselves and each other. Normality is conditioned, and it is conditional.

SATURN RETURN | The Guise of Reality – Zarah Cassim solo Exhibition| until 13 September 2017
For her second solo exhibition Guise of Reality, Zarah Cassim has been reading Dostoevky’s 1864 novella Notes from Underground. This Russian set 1800s rambling memoir of a fictional narrator is a thinly veiled attack on Western Philosophy and proposes an alternative consciousness constituted by the anti-hero archetype. It is essentially a modern dystopian text heralding an “existential attitude” – disorientation in the face of a confusing and meaningless world.

Unfinished Stories: Post-Pop Monologues With Dialogic Intent | 10 August – 30 September 2017
In the post-pop world of consumer-driven monologues of selfhood – of blogs and vlogs and selfie-sticks – we ache for dialogue with our peers: drawing, scribbling, typing, photoshopping, picture-snapping, instagramming and collaging, putting it out there in search of the other who will understand exactly what we are trying to say. Comics, murals, Youtube animations, assemblages of all kinds. Unfinished Stories, all.

The Thirsty Oyster Tavern
Legend has it that old Rasta on the Roof found this shipwreck in the Old Harbour and turned it into a pub and restaurant called ‘The Thirsty Oyster Tavern’, where, to quote him, ‘home is where the anchor drops’. So why not drop anchor here for a while, crack open that careworn shell and slip into our relaxed and friendly ambiance – whether it be in the cool breezes of summer or by the warm, cosy fires in winter – we have 3 fireplaces to ensure you stay nice and warm. And that infamous South Easter? Don’t fuss! We’re pretty sheltered, tucked in as we are, between the Naval College and the National Sea Rescue facility.
